Write up;
Calgary’s local art scene is growing while supporting spaces are diminishing. All age venues are particularly hard to come by, and the few existing ones have faced closure by the city in recent months.
In response to this, local musicians and visual artists are coming together to provide Calgary with an inclusive, interdisciplinary space for local independent artists to display their many talents.
The space, dubbed Comrad Sound (taken from the building’s original sign “Commercial Radio & Sound”), is being developed as a non-profit organization that will allow established and emerging artists to utilize a showroom at a prime location in the heart of Calgary. The space is open to complete creative freedom, which we hope will be the home of live music, visual art and lecture/workshop series. Education will be provided by community volunteer specialists which will include a variety of topics, including art technique such as silk screening or guitar repair, as well as topics relevant to Calgarian urbanites such as bike repair. People are so eager for this space that we have already have an overwhelming amount of volunteers and are confident that our progress is viable this way. People really want to get involved, providing their own ideas and knowing that like-minded people will be assisting them. The space is a great for social networking and also exemplary as a resource center.
The space would be temporary, as the building is scheduled to be demolished within two years.
Due to the temporary nature of the project, funds would be directed at; – rent, utilities, insurance, and anything other such necessary administration fees – renovations of the space to get building up to code – supplies for set up including furniture (tables, chairs, lamps etc.) – supplementary supplies for workshops i.e. paint, bike tools – a projector for film screenings
Future funding will hopefully come in the form of government grants, as non-profit organizations become eligible to apply for these after one year of existence. All of this will ensure that we can provide free space for artists, and little or no cover charge for any person wishing to attend any events. This is our goal, as out target is primarily youth and low income persons in order to stimulate new and unrestrained artistic achievement within Calgary.
